Trans*forming Family

thoughts on the transition journey of our entire family, from the proud mother of a transgender son

Did you hear about…? (News from the week ending August 12 2012)

At my house, we usually have lively dinner table discussion that often involves current events and political issues. One of the frequent questions we ask each other as we start a conversation is: Did you hear about…?

I’ve decided to begin a regular weekly posting of news articles and media that i come across of interest to the LGBTQmunity. If you know of a great story i’ve missed, please feel free to share it in the comments.

What’s So Bad About a Boy Who Wants to Wear a Dress?
Published in The New York Times, this informative piece looks at the lives of families of gender-nonconforming youth. I prefer to ignore the “comments” section.

Transgender Kids: What Parents Need to Know
This piece from Yahoo! Shine is a companion to The New York Times article, and quotes the wonderful Kim Pearson (founder of TYFA) in encouraging parents to allow children to express their gender creativity.

Texas Legislator Mary Gonzalez Comes Out As Pansexual
Though i personally look forward to the day when this wouldn’t be “news”, for the moment it is nice to hear the following from Mary Gonzalez, in an interview with Dallas Voice :

Gonzalez said she identifies as “pansexual,” an orientation many would call bisexual, except pansexuals don’t believe in a gender binary and can be attracted to all gender identities. Gonzalez said she doesn’t believe in a gender binary because “gender identity isn’t the defining part of my attraction.”

Vietnam Hosts First Ever LGBT Pride Parade
A picture is worth a thousand words:

The Potential Impact of Voter Identification Laws on Transgender Voters
Nine states — Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin — have passed strict voter ID laws which could create difficulties or even prevent voting for the transgender individuals living in those states.

Transgender Man’s Doctor Failed to Inform Him of Breast Cancer Diagnosis
I don’t want to make a habit of posting bad news, but this man’s story reminds me of Robert Eads, whose last year of life was documented in the award-winning Southern Comfort and who died due to lack of treatment for cancer by doctors who didn’t understand or simply did not want to treat a transgender patient, and this kind of disregard for human life needs to be exposed. Thankfully the Affordable Healthcare Act (aka “Obamacare”) bans this refusal to treat as sex discrimination, but sadly doctors can’t be forced to respect their patients even when they must treat them (and i have some experiences of our own to share on that topic, when i get around to writing about them).

And finally, as a nice contrast to the Chick-fil-A / Dan Cathy news, two positive business reports: Amtrak’s Ride With Pride campaign, and Bill Marriott (of the Marriott hotel chain) showing how to keep the personal beliefs of one man from affecting an entire company.

Thanks to your link, I now have a better understanding of what pansexual means. I first heard the term in a Safe Zone training workshop at my former job, but it wasn’t given a very contextual definition.

Oh, and I like the new title. It seems to fit the tone of your blog a little better (but you couldn’t have known what the tone would be 6 months ago, so the other name was good, too).

I only recently learned what pansexual means myself. I’ve actually learned a lot from my son, who shares with me some of the things that they learn in his support group. Thank you for your words about the title; i think it fits the tone better too and i would eventually like to get my other family members to write a post occasionally if they are willing.

Thank you. Indeed, tell us the good news. There is enough of it, and I know enough about the haters, without wanting to dwell on their idiocies and nastinesses.

I’m usually too busy in my day to find articles like these. Maybe you could tweet them? Would very much like to read & share them : )

The only way i find them is by setting up Google news alerts to email me when certain topics appear in the news. Like you, i’m too busy to go searching for them. I’ll try to post more of the good news on twitter as well. Thanks for the suggestion.
